I used to love this worship song, now it drives me nuts!
I have always loved worship music. There’s just something about it that calms the soul, renews hope and increases the size of the heart. I used to sing in the worship team at church for over 11 years. I actually believed that every song that spoke about God, was amazing and powerful… until I realized that most songs aren’t really about Him.

As God opens our eyes to the truth about Him, we find the Christian cliche that we have always spoken, “It’s all about Jesus”, to be true. I now realize how much it was about me all along. I was rarely singing about Him, but songs that were centred around me.

Below I take a well-known Christian worship song and dissect it. You can do this with most Christian worship songs and find similar results.
Note the bolded words in each line and you will see the focus of each line which represents the theme of the song…

I Will Worship ~ SONICFLOOd

Chorus:
I will give you all my worship
I will give you all my praise
You alone I long to worship
You alone are worthy of my praise

I will worship (echo)
With all of my heart (echo)
I will praise you (echo)
With all of my strength (all my strength)

I will bow down (echo)
And hail You as king (echo)
I will love You (echo)
Give You everything (everything) [everything speaks of what I will give]

(Chorus)

I will worship (echo)
With all of my heart (echo)
I will serve you (echo)
With all of my strength (all my strength)

I will bow down (echo)
And hail You as king (echo)
I will love You (echo)
Give You everything (everything) [everything speaks of what I will give]

(Chorus)

Sing to You a new song from our hearts
Straight to You
From our Hearts to Yours

We worship Jesus
We love You Father (repeat)

(I wanna give, I wanna give You all the praise x5)

The song speaks of our love; as if to say “look at me and the love I have for you”. When my eyes were open to this, I began changing the lyrics of the songs to make them more personal to the one I love. The greater that we see Jesus, the more truth comes through our worship. Can simply changing the words of a song change the heart of worship? I am not sure it will, but it may cause you to question the words that you are singing and make them your own. I do know that the more revelation we have of Him the greater the depths of love we find ourselves living. 🙂
