Jesus Didn’t Follow the Rules

I used to believe that Jesus was this upright, disciplined, motivated individual who had all His ducks lined up. I used to believe that He was so focused and determined and that is why He lived a sin-free life… that was until He revealed a glimpse of His love to me.

Jesus was human. He grew in wisdom and stature. He was not super human. He had every opportunity to fail as we do, but He remained sinless. How, being a regular human, did He remain sinless? It’s simple: He didn’t follow the rules!

Before you yell heretic and return to Facebook to warn people, read a little further. 🙂

The focus of Christ was never rules. I believe that He did as the writers recorded, BUT with one twist: He did it because of Love. Everything He did was done through love, and through love, He fulfilled every command. He knew the Torah, but He knew His father better! He knew the unity that existed between Him and the Father!!

“In that day you will know that I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I am in you. (Joh 14:20)”

The very life of Christ was wrapped up in the Father and the Father in Him. That is complete unity. Jesus never made a mental list of dos and don’ts. He never listened to a teacher and said “I gotta get better”. He never said “I gotta read the Torah more” or “I gotta get into my Father’s presence”. He never gave thought to right vs wrong, but continually communed and enjoyed the unity that He had in the Father. He was in the Father and the Father was in Him… AND HE KNEW IT! It was truly effortless. I know that sounds like a swear word in most Charismatic circles, but it’s the truth or Christ wouldn’t have said “My yoke is easy, My burden is light.”

If you are still thinking that it’s not possible for us to have that relationship with the Father, keep reading. We have ALWAYS had the same access to the Father as Christ did! Sin has only ever separated us from Him in our mind (Col 1:21). Our access to the Father has always been through Christ!

But what about those who came before Christ?

Those who came before Christ still believed in Christ, the Messiah who was to come. They had faith in a future event. We have faith in a past event. Everything in the Torah pointed toward the future Messiah. It has always been Christ!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. (Joh 1:1-2)

It doesn’t get much better than that! We have [and always have had] unity with the Father through Christ. We can live righteous lives knowing that His righteousness dwells in us. A list of rules bound those who chose to follow a list of rules. Those who choose to walk in the unity that exists find that Love compels them to live it out. What would Jesus do? Jesus wouldn’t follow rules, but rather live in the unity that existed between Him and the Father. Love will always compel man to walk in truth. Be compelled by His love!
